Oral health conditions of institutionalized older adults and associated factors

Introduction: The growth of the Brazilian older adult population has influenced increased demand for institutionalization this public, which usually poor oral health conditions such as edentulism. Objective: To characterize and verify variables related to edentulism institutionalized adults relation time with health. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted 512 in sociodemographic profile, general conditions, care were evaluated by clinical exams, consultations medical records, structured questionnaires. data analyzed Statistical Package Social Sciences using Pearson Chi-square Fisher's Exact tests logistic regression model 95% confidence level. Results: A high DMFT (29.4), prevalence complete (61.3%), need maxillary (73.6%), mandibular rehabilitation (56.8%) observed. Edentulism associated age (p<0.001), lower schooling (p<0.001) non-retirement (p=0.031). found that longer remained even when adjusted (p=0.013). also absence brushing (p=0.024) frequency tooth, gum, prosthesis (p<0.001). Conclusion: is suggested establish routines within long-term institutions effective maintenance throughout time.
